Ergotron's new WorkFit-PD is a freestanding sit stand desk. It will work well for a wide range of users, and as the PD suggests in its name it's primarily a personal desk, rather than a large workstation.
Who is it for?
Pretty much anyone between 5 feet and 6 feet 8 inches high will be able to use this adjustable desk.
However it will appeal to anyone who has limited space thanks to its compact footprint.
Home office workers will find it convenient where available office space is restricted. And for corporate use it makes an excellent choice for break out and hot desking as well as individual use.
What needs to be set up?
It ships ready assembled and the packaging is as near to bulletproof as it comes.
Supplied in a sturdy triple wall box which is fitted with shaped cardboard spacers holding the unit securely in place.
It slides out easily and from there your almost ready to start using it.
You just need to cut the cable tie securing the adjustment lever while in transport.
From there once the unit is in position it's important to ensure it's level adjusting the metal glides.
Once correctly aligned it is very stable in use
If necessary, once your equipment is placed on the top, the tension can be adjusted to give a balanced movement when raising and lowering the top.
This is easy to do using a 14mm socket to adjust the controller concealed under the central support, clockwise to reduce and anti clockwise to increase tension.
How does it all work?
In use it is very straightforward to change working height. It's all done by a single lever operating a cable controlled brake mechanism. Pulling the lever up releases the brake and from there the top can be rapidly adjusted to the height you would like to work at.
The lever controls the desk's patented constant force lift and pivot mechanism. Within the central support column is a slotted aluminum ladder. Pulling the lever up releases the brake lock and lowering it engages the lock. A quick press on the worktop makes sure the lock engages securely.
Adjustment is rapid and controlled and is far quicker than either an electrically controlled or crank handle operated desk.
Another neat feature is its inbuilt keyboard and mouse tray. This sits 6 inches beneath the worktop and is retractable and so can be pushed out of the way when not needed. The tray has a 5 degree back angle placing wrists in a neutral position.
Moving on to the technical details.
Technical details and dimensions
The WorkFit-PD sit stand desk comes in a single size in a choice of 3 laminate top finishes – light grey, walnut and birch and is pre drilled to take one of Ergotron's vertical monitor supports.
Top size is 31.50 inches wide by 23.4 inches deep with the retractable keyboard/ mouse tray being 26.30 inches wide 9.50 inches deep and can be pulled out by 7 inches when in use.
The support legs are arranged in a back to back C shape giving good leg accessibility for users. The overall footprint of the legs is 29 inches by 25.8 inches.
Top adjustment ranges from a low of 32 inches up to a maximum of 51.50 inches on 3/4 inch increments.
There are several useful accessories which can be added for increased functionality.
First, there are LCD monitor supports for single and double displays which allow vertical movement as well as forward and backward tilting of the screen. Fitting is easy using the ready made locating points in the top.
There is also a cable management box which fits under the desktop and is handy for tidying things like power blocks and cables out of the way.
And if you have a CPU there is a convenient holder which lets users clip it securely to the vertical desk support.
Weight capacity of the top is 38lbs and keyboard tray 2lbs.
The product has a 5 year manufacturer's warranty.
Ergotron's WorkFit-PD adjustable desk is a solidly built product which is very easy to adjust. The cleverly designed adjustment mechanism means the top can be moved in seconds to the desired height using only finger tip pressure.
The lowest top height setting is 32 inches which is some two inches higher than a standard desk. So, if using it purely as a work surface you may need to raise you seat height. However when using it with a monitor and keyboard this wouldn't cause an issue as the keyboard goes down as low as 26.75 inches.
Where users don't intend to use a monitor support the ready made mounting points in the desk top can look a bit unsightly. However these do have plastic bungs in them, so it's mainly cosmetic and when using a freestanding monitor they probably won't be visible anyway.
All in all this is an excellent compact height adjustable desk, ideal for offices where space is tight. It's ease of adjustment makes it more likely users will change their working height frequently during the working day.
