Capisco In Half Standing Use
Many people's first reaction when they see the HAG Capisco chair is that it looks odd, uncomfortable even.
This is perfectly understandable as it's certainly different in appearance to what we normally expect an office chair to look like.
However as the old saying goes looks can be deceptive so let's dig a little deeper and discover who can benefit from using this chair.
Who is it for?
HÅG's Capisco makes an excellent choice of seat for anyone working at a raised work surface. The reason it works so well is down to the huge range of height adjustment it offers. It's easy to go from a sitting position to a semi standing posture rapidly. As a result it is ideal for height adjustable desk users.
Working in a half standing posture or perching is popular with sit stand desk users because it's comfortable to work this way for extended periods. How does the Capisco makes this possible?
What makes it different?
As already pointed out the range of height adjustability is a key feature for adjustable height desk workers. However that's by no means all. Another of its major benefits is in the rather odd looking saddle seat.
The reason this works so well is it allows the user to place their legs at a wider more stable angle. When you are working at a raised level you don't want to feel wobbly and as the saddle enables your legs to be easily placed wider apart you gain a really secure posture.

Capisco Backwards
Not only that it helps you to sit with your body at a much more open angle. This is far healthier than the rigid 90° so common with most office chairs.
Another neat part of the design is the quirky looking projections that form part of the back. These are great for resting your elbows on when you feel like reclining and taking a brief break from work. It's even possible to sit on the chair backwards and rest the tops of your arms over the back's projections or on the top of the back rest itself. Let's move onto the technical aspects of the seat.
Technical details
There are 4 versions of the Capisco, two of them have backs and two have seats only. Each version is offered with either the saddle seat or a more conventional waterfall front edged seat pan. Height adjustable desk users should stick with the saddle version as the lack of flexibility with the office chair seat style version would be less comfortable when working at higher levels.
There are various different gas lift options available for the Capisco and for adjustable height desk users the 265mm pneumatic lift is the one to go for as it adjusts between 21.50 and 31.875 inches. There is an optional footring, however for sit stand working it is best avoided as it will get in the way.
For the versions with a back there is an optional headrest. This is mainly intended for use when reclining so if you like to sit back a lot it's a useful accessory to have.
Here's a summary of the standard features on all Capiscos
- Seat depth adjustment for optimal leg comfort
- Seat height adjustment
- Fully floating seat angle to encourage movement (recommended)
- 3 lockable seat angles (not recommended)
- Tilt tension adjuster for user weight balancing
- 5 star aluminum base in black or silver with molded footrests
Overall opinion
Despite its quirky looks the HÅG Capisco is an excellent chair for users of moving top work surfaces. There are so many different ways to sit and interact with the chair compared with most other types of seat. Its saddle seat may take some getting used to to begin with, however once you get accustomed to it you'll find it feels both comfortable and natural to sit in whether working sitting or half standing.
