GeekDesk® was an early mover in popularizing the idea of height adjustable desks in North America when it introduced its Original and Mini desks in 2009. These were both based on Conset products, a European supplier of moving top desks.
Since then GeekDesk® has moved on and now sources its desk components elsewhere. It currently offers two models – Max and v3 and it is these products that we are reviewing.
Who are they for?
Both GeekDesk® products will appeal to those looking for a no frills, workmanlike adjustable height desk. Adjustability range is good and will suit most users both short and tall. Weight lifting capacity is pretty decent, enabling you to place plenty of equipment on the work surface, especially on the Max.
Let’s look at the two desks in more detail.
Product technical details
GeekDesk® Max is the heavier duty model and the frame will support a total weight capacity of 335lbs. It’s built around a three-section nested channel leg with the largest channel at the base.
The legs are tied together with a channel for stability, mounted on the lower part of the leg riser and both housing a concealed motor. The motors are operated by an electronic controller that includes 4 memory preset buttons to store your favorite working heights. There is LED height readout as well as separate raise and lower buttons.
It’s other model, GeekDesk® v3 is broadly similar but has a reduced total frame load capacity of 275lbs, which will still be adequate for many users. It too uses triple section legs that are braced with a slightly shallower horizontal channel support. Each leg has a concealed motor, however these are operated by a basic two button raise lower control, so no preset positions and no digital readout.
Both desks come with the same options on top sizes and finishes, frame widths and paint colors.
Large 78.75” x 31.5”
Large 63” x 31.5”
Small 47.25” x 31.5”
Large tops are fitted with 3 cable grommets, one to each end and one in the center, small tops have two, one at each end.
Carbonized bamboo is a finish more commonly associated with wood flooring. In its natural state bamboo is a bland buff color and the carbonizing process is used to give it a more lustrous appearance. It’s a heat process that draws out the sugars in the bamboo causing it to darken.
Fixed 55.1” width for use with large tops
Fixed 39.4” width for use with small top
Both have 22” top arm supports
Frames adjust from a low of 23.5” to a high of 49.2” and are available in silver or black paint finish.
Frame only option
If you prefer to provide your own worktop, then you are able to buy frames on their own.
These are limited to locking casters and a standing mat. The casters are a bit industrial looking and only carry a 1 year warranty.
GeekDesks come with a 2 year warranty on moving parts and motor, structural parts have 5 years warranty. Any replacement parts required are shipped without charge. The 2 year moving parts cover is surprisingly short, a number of competitors now cover these items for 5 years or longer.
Both GeekDesk® models are durable products with twin motors and three stage legs and are definitely preferable to lower specification desks with single motors and two stage legs. However, many competing desks like Jarvis and Uplift also utilize these better quality leg/motor combinations and match or exceed weight carrying capacity and maximum height.
It perhaps surprising that GeekDesk® hasn't expanded of even changed its moving desk range since 2012, sticking to essentially two products. With the proliferation of interest in standing desks in the US and a host of competing products entering the market it seems a little odd the range hasn't been expanded.
What’s also noticeable is the absence of common accessories like monitor arms, keyboard trays, specialist seats, CPU holders etc. Of course all of these things can be sourced elsewhere, however this leaves desk buyers to work out on their own whether an accessory is suitable or not.
Contact with the company is via either an online form or email. There is no toll free number, or indeed any number where prospective buyers or existing customers can speak with the company.
With all that said, people wanting a rectangular adjustable height desk and are happy with the limited size range shouldn’t have problems with a GeekDesk®.
